A recent letter to the Larimer County CommissionersIn a receLarimer County commissioners, we had urged them to attend the meeting of the Northern Front Range Mountain Pine Beetle Working Group on January 30. This was a policy meeting being attended by county governments and governmental agencies along the northern Front Range to discuss how they could coordinate their efforts to mitigate the damage being caused by the pine beetle. Newly elected Commissioner Tom Donnelly represented Larimer County at the meeting. Thanks you Tom. Commissioners attended from Boulder, Jefferson, Gilpin and Eagle Counties as well. We all know that it is impossible to stop the pine beetle infestation. It will have to run it's course. As with other natural phenomena like floods and earthquakes, however, it is possible to reduce the damage that will be done. If you would like to find out what your commissioners are planning on doing to assist landowners in reducing the damage that will be done from the beetle infestation and subsequent increased chance of wildfires in the next fews years, you should contact them and ask. It might not hurt to remind them of how many of their constituents are concerned. Recently two more areas of beetle infestation in Ponderosa Pine were discovered in the Stove Prairie area. The beetles attacked these trees during the last flight in late August and early September. Most of the infested trees are still green and won't fade until Spring. If you don't know how to spot newly infested trees or what to do with them once they are identified, stay tuned. Tree Farmer hosted tours of locally infested areas are in the works. In the meantime, ask your commissioners what they are planning on doing to help you.
